What is a DAF?

A DAF (or donor-advised fund) is a charitable giving account that allows individuals, families, or organizations to make charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations over time, while receiving an immediate tax deduction for the contributions made to their DAF account.

What are the benefits of donating through a DAF?

  1. Immediate tax deduction:
    • You receive a tax deduction in the year you contribute to your DAF, even if the grants you make to charitable organizations happen in future years.

      • Tax deductions include:
        • Cash gifts of up to 60% of your adjusted gross income.
        • Appreciated assets (e.g. stocks) of up to 30% of your adjusted gross income, often without capital gains tax.
  2. Flexible giving:
    • DAFs allow you to contribute more immediately tax-deductible income during higher income years, but gives you the flexibility of disbursing those donations to charitable organizations at your own pace over multiple years.

  3. Simplified record-keeping:
    • A DAF makes record-keeping simple. The DAF provider will handle your receipts and tax documentation, and consolidate all of your charitable contributions in a single source.

  4. Legacy and succession planning:
    • DAFs allow you to name beneficiaries or successors to continue your legacy.

  5. Grow your contributions tax-free:
    • Some DAF organizations (like Fidelity Charitable or Vanguard Charitable) allow for your DAF contributions to be invested so that the funds grow tax-free, thereby increasing your available grants.
