To see a future of extended healthy human lifespan and freedom from age-related disease as fast as possible requires buy-in from all members of society: the public, regulators, investors, and you. Just like successful advocates for cancer and AIDS research in the past, we recognize that this all starts with persuading the public that the work of our vitally important field is desirable, ethical, and feasible.
Positive public sentiment is a key driver for policy makers, who affect federal and state-level appropriation of funds, investors who focus on both financial and societal returns, and companies creating the therapies and technological breakthroughs to increase healthy human lifespan. As such a core part of our mission is engaging the public where they are, on the internet and in their living rooms, and inspiring a societal change to prioritize research to with the ability to keep everyone healthy, longer.
We collaborate with top-tier content creators on YouTube to reach millions, and create content of our own to center aging research.
We have created a crowdfunding platform dedicated to supporting aging research, and engaging the world to support critical projects directly.
As part of our outreach, we speak about the science and promise of aging research on network television, news programs, podcasts, and other media.
While there is still much work to be done, it is important to note that polls from reputable organizations such as Pew Research and YouGov indicate broad public receptivity to life extension when framed appropriately, and likely increasing in recent years.
Even so it is important to continually advocate for the prioritization of longevity research, as well as inform the public as to the scientific realities of our field and work to dispel common misconceptions and hype. This can minimize risk of societal pushback when credible breakthroughs do arrive.
One of the most powerful effects of positive public sentiment regarding life extension can bring is making the ground fertile for policy-facing organizations to catalyze support for aging research at the governmental level, as described in the 2016 talk “Reaching a Societal Turning Point on Life Extension” by the President of Lifespan Research Institute, Keith Comito.
Building upon increasing public support for aging research, the A4LI has been hosting impactful events in DC, building a growing longevity caucus in congress, and create several proposals in support of increased funding for and acceleration of aging research.
Lifespan Research Institute is proud to serve as A4LI’s Fiscal Sponsor, able to receive donations in support of A4LI’s on-mission activities that are able to be supported by a 501(c)(3) suchas ourselves.
Public engagement is key to building momentum for longevity science, and you can make a critical difference. Your support helps us transform awareness into action. Join us in driving progress toward longer, healthier lives.
